New York Times Op-Ed Columnist to Visit Greater Nebraska
Nebraska Ag Connection - 10/17/2018

New York Times Op-Ed columnist David Brooks will visit Greater Nebraska Oct. 23-24 as part of Weave: The Social Fabric Project. His tour will include stops in McCook and North Central Nebraska communities including Stuart, Ainsworth, Bassett, Atkinson and O'Neill to conduct interviews with local community builders and see firsthand the accomplishments of these extraordinary hometowns. Brooks' visit to McCook will also include a speaking engagement at the McCook Rotary meeting 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Fox Theatre. Titled "The Cultural Revolution We Need," Brooks' talk is open to the public. Seating is not assigned and will be available on a first come, first served basis. Doors open at Noon.

Launched in the spring of 2018, Weave starts with the idea that social fragmentation is the central problem of our time -- isolation, alienation and division. Fortunately, all across the country, groups and individuals are rebuilding communities and creating social capital. Weave seeks to work with these groups to spur a movement to repair the national fabric. Through community visits, the Weave team identifies these groups, celebrates them, synthesizes the values that move them, and helps forge a common identity.

During their time in Nebraska, Brooks and his team will engage in a "listening tour" which will include one-on-one interviews and community tours. McCook and the North Central region were selected through a partnership with Nebraska Community Foundation (NCF) which is unleashing abundant local assets, inspiring charitable giving, and connecting ambitious people in over 250 communities across the state.

"There is an abundance of good news to be shared across the NCF network and Mr. Brooks and his team had their pick of numerous Nebraska communities that have excelled in people attraction, economic development and community building," said Jeff Yost, president and CEO of Nebraska Community Foundation. "These communities have long been a model to the NCF network and we are thrilled to see our friends in McCook, Stuart, Ainsworth, Bassett, Atkinson and O'Neill getting the attention and recognition they deserve on a national level."

Brooks is an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times, a position he began in September 2003, as well as the executive director of Weave: The Social Fabric Project at the Aspen Institute. He is a commentator on "PBS NewsHour," NPR's "All Things Considered," and NBC's "Meet the Press." Brooks is the author of "Bobos in Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There," and "The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement." In Ap¬ril 2015, he released his fourth book, "The Road to Character," which was a No. 1 New York Times best-seller. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
