Creighton Global Scholars Program to Create Thinkers, Achievers, Leaders
Nebraska Ag Connection - 01/08/2018

A new, immersive, international undergraduate program is taking flight at Creighton University at the start of the 2018 academic year.

The Creighton Global Scholars Program aims to expand students' educational experiences by incorporating study in at least four different countries over the course of their University career. Starting with the very first freshman semester at the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia, students are off on an academic journey combining international perspectives with the rigors and rewards of a Creighton education, both at home on the Omaha campus and far afield.

"Through language immersion, service-learning, research, internship and specialized coursework, Global Scholars will go beyond their comfort zones and embrace both the beautiful and harsh realities of our world," said Creighton President the Rev. Daniel Hendrickson, SJ, PhD. "Their experiences will cultivate a unique and rich lens through which to understand and examine the complex cultures and contexts we face every day and see firsthand how their majors can make a real impact. I have no doubt that these Scholars will graduate Creighton as well-rounded, Jesuit-educated, global citizens ready to make their mark on the world."

The selective program builds on Creighton's extant international relationships, including the University's Dominican Republic campus, which has been an integral component of Creighton's global work for more than 40 years. Global Scholars will spend either the fall or spring semester of their sophomore years at the Dominican Republic campus.

In addition to the semesters in Australia and the Dominican Republic in their first two academic years, Global Scholars will also participate in Faculty-Led Programs Away during the summers following their sophomore and junior years, and will be encouraged to seek other global opportunities as juniors and seniors. Scholars will also spend time on the Creighton campus, taking in the full involvement of being a Bluejay, with specialized advising, workshops and events to help enrich the international experience.

The Global Scholars Program will be housed in the Global Engagement Office, an initiative sparked by Fr. Hendrickson in his presidential inaugural address in 2015.
