Minnesota Sends National Guard Troops to Nebraska

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Wednesday signed Emergency Executive Order 19-07, providing emergency aerial assistance to the State of Nebraska. Beginning on March 13, rapid snowmelt floodwaters inundated large portions of Nebraska, severely impacting communities across the state. This has caused dangerous conditions that are endangering the life and property of the state. The resources of affected local, county, and state governments are inadequate to meet the demands caused by the historic flooding. The Governor of Nebraska declared a peacetime emergency and the State of Nebraska has requested Minnesota Army National Guard helicopter support under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC).

"There is no question that the severe flooding in Nebraska calls for critical, efficient, and fast action in order to protect the lives and property of the state," said Governor Walz, who served in the National Guard in both Minnesota and Nebraska. "We have heard the call to action and are humbled to lend a helping hand to our midwestern neighbors during this catastrophic flooding."

"The Minnesota Army National Guard sent one CH-47 Chinook helicopter with 10 personnel to support flood response operations in Nebraska this morning," said Maj. Gen. Jon Jensen, The Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard. "While we lend a hand to our neighbors in Nebraska during this difficult time, our guardsmen remain ready to provide assistance should our unique capabilities be needed here at home."

The Emergency Executive Order goes into effect today, March 20, 2019 and will remain in effect until the emergency flood conditions in Nebraska subside or it expires in accordance with Minnesota Statutes 2018, section 12.31, subd. 2.
