Auctions to Follow Open Houses of Student-Built Homes
Nebraska Ag Connection - 05/17/2017

Two student-designed and -built, new homes will be open to the public for inspection in late May and then sold at public auction in June at Northeast Community College in Norfolk. The open houses are scheduled for May 30 and June 1 from 7-9 p.m. at Northeast Community College. The homes will be auctioned Saturday, June 10, at 10 a.m. at the college.

Students in the Northeast building construction, electrical construction and control and plumbing technology programs worked on the houses over the past two-years.

The first is a 1,634-square-foot, two-bedroom home with an attached two-car garage, that features two-and-a-half baths, formal dining room, main-floor laundry room, and coffered ceilings. It also has Anderson casement windows with R-21 sidewalls and R-44 attic cellulose insulation.

The second home is a 1,638-square-foot, two-bedroom home, also with an attached two-car garage. It also includes two-and-a-half baths, formal dining room, and coffered ceilings. In addition, this home has Anderson casement windows with R-21 sidewalls and R-44 attic cellulose insulation.

Shanelle Grudzinki, interim dean of applied technology at Northeast, said both homes have pre-painted fiber cement siding, asphalt shingles and pre-finished laminate flooring in the entryways, kitchens and dining rooms. These houses also have Ferche' oak millwork stained to match the built-in custom hickory cabinetry. Many other custom items have been built into both houses.

Both homes include all water, vent and waste lines stubbed to below floor level for ease of hook-up. Grudzinki said these homes meet or exceed local and state building codes. All electrical conveniences were installed in accordance with the national electric and FHA code. Circuits are tested and connected to a 200-amp breaker panel.

Buyers must pay 20-percent down the day of the sale and the balance when the home is moved at buyer's expense within 60 days. A sales tax of 7.5-percent will be collected at final closing.
