SCC Students Receive Scholarships
Nebraska Ag Connection - 05/18/2017

Four students at Nebraska's Southeast Community College received scholarships from the College and Community Service Organization.

The $400 scholarships are given to non-traditional students who achieve a 3.0 grade-point average or higher, complete 24 credit hours and declare a program of study. They must also complete an essay about their future plans.

The four recipients are Brooke Berning, a Human Services student from Council Bluffs, Iowa; Debbie Dugan, a Physical Therapist Assistant student from Lincoln; Maggie Jones, a Diesel Technology student from Chadron; and Madison Martin, an Agriculture Businessand Management Technology student from Davenport.

"This scholarship means the world to me," Berning said. "It will help me pay for my last book that I need as well as transportation to and from Lincoln. I don't want to take out any more loans because I owe so much already. I really appreciate whoever nominated me for this scholarship."

When Berning graduates in September, she hopes to find a job in case management and eventually continue her education. She is a recovering drug addict and wants to help others who struggle with their addictions.

"Right now I am leaning toward working with the homeless and helping them find resources," she said. "I have a passion for helping others who struggle with their own addictions and life problems."

Jeannine Bryant, owner of Changing Spaces SRS was the featured speaker. The brunch and awards ceremony took place at SCC's Lincoln Campus.
