DHHS/DOL SNAP Next Step Now Serving Lexington Area
Nebraska Ag Connection - 06/14/2019

A joint program of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Nebraska Department of Labor (DOL) that has helped more than 160 state residents find new and better employment was rolled out, this week, in the Lexington area.

SNAP Next Step helps Nebraskans enrolled in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) find more suitable jobs through job search and resume assistance, interview training, vouchers to buy clothing for interviews and paying for child care and similar services.

"Participants who have committed to the SNAP Next Step program in other communities have realized an average increase in wages of more than $900 a month, or $11,000 a year," said Matt Wallen, Director of the Division of Children and Family Services, which administers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). "Residents of the Lexington area who would like to work more hours, gain more income, work in a job more relevant to their education or establish a more family-friendly work schedule can now get assistance pursuing those goals through the Next Step program."

The SNAP Next Step program was launched in 2016 in Grand Island and has since expanded to Hastings, Columbus, Norfolk, Scottsbluff, North Platte and Sidney.

"As the program expands across the state, participants are reaching employment goals and living better lives," said Commissioner of Labor John H. Albin. "The partnership between DHHS and DOL is helping Nebraskans upgrade skill sets, overcome barriers and realize their potential."

To qualify for the program, individuals must currently receive SNAP benefits, be employed or unemployed for less than 90 days and reside in a household that includes at least one work-eligible adult (legal permanent resident or U.S. citizen).
