Ficke Cattle Co. to Host NRCS Field Day Aug. 26
Nebraska Ag Connection - 08/23/2017

Ficke Cattle Company -- Graze Master Genetics would like to invite all interested farmers, ranchers and the public to attend a free cover crops field day hosted by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) on Aug. 26. The tour will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Ficke Cattle Company will serve free pastries and refreshments at the start of the session at the farm location; 873 182nd R., Pleasant Dale.

"The only mistake you can make with cover crops is not planting them," said Del Ficke, owner of Ficke Cattle Company. "We have had great success implementing cover crops such as Sorghum Sudan, Sainfoin, rye and clovers. The ultra-high-density-grazing of these cover crops by our Graze Master Herd provides nutrition for our cattle and benefits soil health. Most importantly, we are retaining high levels of moisture in our fields. There is a lot of complexity out there around regenerative agriculture and we want to cut through that complexity and provide interested people with straight-forward answers and no-nonsense, profitable solutions that will really work for them."

Aaron Hird, NRCS State Soil Health Specialist said, "This project is demonstrating the use of soil health management systems and the adaptive use of cover crops at multiple locations across the state through the focus of a Nebraska NRCS Soil Health Initiative. It is critical for the NRCS to come alongside land managers to make observations and develop conclusions about management questions concerning the use of cover crops for soil health improvement.

"The NRCS welcomes anyone with interest or questions about cover crops to get connected with this project and this soil health management system," he added.

The tour will include soil health demonstrations such as a rainfall and infiltration simulator and the Nebraska NRCS Soil Health Assessment procedure. Doug Garrison, NRCS area resource conservationist; Conor Ward, NRCS resource conservationist; and Aaron Hird, NRCS state soil health specialist; will be presenting along with Ficke and Nate Belcher, owner of Green Acres Cover Crops.
