The Meat Institute today expressed strong opposition to the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's recommendation to reduce meat consumption.
Julie Anna Potts, President and CEO of the Meat Institute, argued the guidance fails to recognize meat's essential role in a healthy diet.
"For the 95% of Americans who consume meat, the Report’s recommendations are tone deaf and unrealistic," stated Potts.
The Institute highlights that meat provides critical nutrients like protein, iron, and vitamins essential for various life stages—from childhood development to preventing muscle loss in older adults.
The report undermines meat's importance in meeting dietary needs for protein and essential minerals, which are under-consumed according to the Committee's findings.
The Institute criticizes the guidelines for being out of touch with cultural dietary habits and the realistic nutritional needs of most Americans.
The Meat Institute represents a broad community ensuring meat remains a central part of healthy diets and culturally diverse food traditions.
The organization continues advocating for meat's place in nutritional guidelines, promoting its benefits for health and well-being.
