York Groundbreaking Highlights Success of Workforce Housing Act
Nebraska Ag Connection - 06/12/2019

Tuesday, Governor Pete Ricketts visited York to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Creekside Apartments. The $5.1 million, 48-unit multifamily complex is the latest project to be carried out using funding from the Nebraska Rural Workforce Housing Investment Act (Housing Act).

"To date, at least a dozen rural communities throughout Nebraska have made significant investments to their workforce housing inventory as a direct result of the Housing Act," said Ricketts. "That is incredible progress in the short time since the Act was passed. These investments will give many families a great place to live, help to attract new opportunities, and grow our state for years to come."

Signed into law in 2017, the Housing Act was designed to address a growing need for affordable workforce housing in rural Nebraska. York is one of at least 12 communities to date that have used funding from the Housing Act to invest in local workforce housing development. So far, nearly 600 units with over $71 million in combined project costs are planned across the state, with many more projects to come.

The Creekside Apartments are made possible by a $323,000 Housing Act award, administered to York County Development Corporation by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED). In addition to the award, the York community--including a variety of local employers--contributed over $500,000 to the project.

In all, funding from the Housing Act has already been matched by over $10 million in local investments statewide.

"The Housing Act has generated incredible momentum in rural Nebraska, helping our communities address an important need for new workforce housing options," said DED Director Dave Rippe. "There is a lot to be excited about in terms of the economic growth and job creation that will occur as these investments and projects continue."

The Creekside Apartments will consist of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. They are scheduled for completion in 2020.
