Nebraska Winter Wheat Falls as Oat Production Expands

Nebraska Winter Wheat Falls as Oat Production Expands

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska's small-grain crops delivered mixed results in 2026, with winter wheat production falling significantly while oat production posted strong gains. Data from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) showed lower wheat yields and harvested acreage, while oats benefited from expanded acreage and improved production.

Winter wheat production is estimated at 17.2 million bushels, down 55% from the previous year. The decline was driven by fewer harvested acres and lower yields, making it a challenging season for Nebraska wheat growers.

The area harvested for winter wheat grain totaled 520,000 acres, a 35% decrease from 2025. Planted acreage reached 910,000 acres, down 4% from the previous year, indicating relatively stable planting levels despite lower production.

Winter wheat yields are expected to average 33.0 bushels per acre, down 14 bushels from 2025. The combination of reduced acreage and lower productivity contributed to a substantial drop in overall wheat output.

In contrast, Nebraska's oat crop performed well in 2026. Production is estimated at 1.5 million bushels, up 51% from the previous year, supported by both higher acreage and improved yields.

Farmers harvested 29,000 acres of oats for grain, a 45% increase from 2025. Total planted oat acreage climbed to 155,000 acres, up 24%, reflecting greater interest in the crop among Nebraska producers.

Average oat yield is estimated at 52.0 bushels per acre, up 2 bushels from last year. Combined with increased planting and harvesting activity, the yield improvement helped drive higher production levels.

The contrasting performances of winter wheat and oats highlight the changing dynamics within Nebraska's small-grain sector. While wheat producers faced lower yields and production, oat growers benefited from expanded acreage and stronger output.

The latest USDA-NASS estimates provide important insights into Nebraska's agricultural trends and offer a clearer picture of how the state's small-grain crops performed during the 2026 growing season.
