Nebraska Farmers Explore New Collaboration Opportunities

Nebraska Farmers Explore New Collaboration Opportunities

By Scout Nelson

Local food producers often manage multiple responsibilities, from production and marketing to deliveries and business operations. To help farmers explore ways to improve efficiency, the Local Foods Collaboration Summit on Nov. 9 will focus on the benefits of collaboration among producers.

The event was highlighted by Skylar Falter, program coordinator for Buy Fresh Buy Local Nebraska, who explained how producers can work together while maintaining their independence. Collaborative efforts can help reduce costs and improve access to resources without changing the identity of individual farms.

Examples of collaboration include coordinating deliveries, sharing equipment and storage space, utilizing common processing facilities and pooling resources for marketing efforts. Producers can also work together to secure better pricing on services such as insurance and other business expenses.

A successful example is Wildflower Grocer in O’Neill, Nebraska, which was established to create market opportunities for local producers. The operation now supports multiple farms through retail sales, shared kitchen space and a collaborative CSA program.

Falter noted that some partnerships can remain informal, requiring only communication and mutual understanding. More extensive projects involving shared investments or infrastructure may require formal agreements or cooperative business structures.

The summit will be held at the Lancaster County Extension Office in Lincoln and is open to farmers, ranchers and growers serving local and regional markets. Attendees will learn about collaborative marketing, cooperative models and strategies for building successful partnerships.

Participants who identify potential collaboration opportunities may also access technical assistance funding for professional support. Additional educational programs, webinars and outreach efforts are planned to further strengthen local food systems across Nebraska.
