USDA Fixes September Corn Estimates, October Unchanged

USDA Fixes September Corn Estimates, October Unchanged

By Scout Nelson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has corrected September 2026 corn yield and production data after identifying a processing error that affected estimates for Nebraska, Kansas, and national corn forecasts. Following a review, the agency confirmed that the October 2026 forecasts were not affected and remain unchanged.

The issue was identified after concerns were raised about figures published in the October 9, 2026, Crop Production report. NASS determined that a processing error affected September corn plant population counts, ear counts, yield estimates, and production forecasts for Nebraska and Kansas.

The error also influenced 10-state average calculations for plant populations and ear counts, as well as U.S. corn yield and production estimates. After completing its review, NASS corrected the affected September data in both its Crop Production reports and Quick Stats database.

According to the agency, the inaccuracies were limited to September estimates and did not carry over into the October forecasts. Updated figures are now reflected in official USDA reporting systems, ensuring accurate information for farmers, agribusinesses, analysts, and policymakers.

The correction is significant because NASS crop reports are widely used across the agricultural industry. Producers, commodity traders, lenders, and agricultural organizations depend on these estimates for production planning, market analysis, and business decision-making.

Following a validation process, NASS confirmed that the October 2026 corn forecasts were accurate and required no revisions. The agency reviewed the October data separately to verify the reliability of the current production outlook.

NASS stated that all corrected reports and updated statistics are available through its official publications and data services. The agency continues to emphasize the accuracy and integrity of U.S. agricultural statistics by promptly addressing and correcting identified errors.

All NASS reports will be available at nass.usda.gov/Publications.
