Nebraska Ag Connection - 09/13/2018

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, released the following statement Wednesday after the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the Chadron Native American Center Inc. will receive a rural business development grant for more than $158,000:

"This well-deserved grant award will help build and grow Native American businesses in Chadron. The Chadron Native American Center will be able to bring in training and support because of this investment. I'm hopeful these resources will lead to more prosperity and opportunity in the community."

More information on this grant award from the USDA:

This Rural Development investment will be used to train and support small Native American businesses with marketing skills, value-added food production training, and the creation of a makerspace to create arts and crafts. The makerspace will accommodate additional training areas that will include a kitchen area for training on food products to be sold at farmers markets. The marketing skills training will include digital marketing training as well as various live marketing training where hands on training will be provided to the Native American entrepreneurs and businesses. The value-added food production training will focus on local wild fruits that can be picked and turned into jams, jellies, and syrups.

The project will focus on Native American owned businesses and entrepreneurs that are located in Dawes and Sheridan Counties in Nebraska and Bennett, Jackson, and Oglala Lakota Counties in South Dakota. This project is expected to assist at least nine businesses and create or save 18.5 full-time equivalent jobs in the next three years.
