The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has become one of the first 14 institutions in the nation to earn the new Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability. The recognition highlights the university's commitment to sustainability across education, research, campus operations, and community engagement.
Nebraska helped shape the classification through its participation in a pilot program before the framework's official launch. The university was one of 21 institutions selected to test and refine the evaluation process, contributing insights from its land-grant and agriculture-focused mission.
The classification recognizes colleges and universities that integrate sustainability into academic programs, research, operations, career preparation, and community partnerships. Earning the designation required collaboration among faculty, staff, students, and administrators to showcase sustainability efforts across campus.
Sustainability is woven into the university's educational programs through hands-on learning opportunities and experiential projects. Initiatives such as Environmental Engagement and the Community, the Engler Entrepreneurship Program, and the Kiewit Scholars Program help students develop skills related to sustainability, resilience, and community impact.
Research is another major component of Nebraska's sustainability efforts. Faculty and students study topics including soil health, carbon storage, climate-resilient agriculture, food security, water management, flood resilience, and the vitality of rural communities.
The university also advances sustainability through its campus operations. Efforts such as the Central Renewable Energy System at Nebraska Innovation Campus, the All in the Hall recycling program, and the use of electric landscape equipment help reduce environmental impacts while improving operational efficiency.
Nebraska's land-grant mission extends its sustainability work beyond campus through partnerships across the state and around the world. Nebraska Extension, the Lincoln Climate-Smart Collaborative, the National Drought Mitigation Center, and the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute support initiatives focused on climate resilience, water security, agriculture, and community well-being.
As the only Big Ten institution selected for the pilot program, Nebraska played a role in shaping how sustainability achievements are evaluated in higher education. The university will retain the Carnegie Sustainability Classification through 2033 and plans to continue expanding sustainability-focused programs, research, and partnerships.
