Under the guidance of the Inflation Reduction Act, the USDA’s Forest Service has committed over $265 million to conserve private forestlands nationwide, aiming to maintain their ecological and economic value. This funding will support 21 projects in 17 states, preserving nearly 335,000 acres of forest.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized the importance of these forests for providing clean water, recreation, habitat, and jobs.
Projects like the Sunfish Creek Project in Ohio and the Pee Dee Basin Initiative in South Carolina illustrate the program's impact, protecting critical habitats and supporting local economies through sustainable forestry practices.
These investments also align with the President’s Justice40 Initiative, ensuring that 40% of the benefits from federal investments support disadvantaged communities.
The Forest Legacy Program, facilitating these efforts, has been instrumental in conserving important forestlands, enhancing public access, and supporting the forest products industry.
With a focus on sustainable management and conservation, these initiatives help mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon and preserving biodiversity, securing a healthier environment for future generations.
