New Income for Nebraska Farms

New Income for Nebraska Farms

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska farmers and ranchers have an opportunity to explore new income ideas at the Opening the Gate Agri Tourism Opportunities for Nebraska Farms and Ranches workshop. The event takes place on March 12 from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Rowe Sanctuary.

The workshop is hosted by Nebraska Extension and Nebraska Women in Agriculture in partnership with the Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary. The program focuses on helping producers diversify their operations through Agri tourism while protecting agricultural heritage and natural resources.

Agri tourism allows farms and ranches to welcome visitors for activities such as tours, events, wildlife viewing, and educational experiences. These efforts can create additional revenue while keeping farms active and sustainable.

Participants will hear from local experts about important topics such as business planning, marketing strategies, and liability considerations. Speakers will also explain practical steps for starting and managing a successful Agri tourism venture.

The program includes a conservation focused tour and guided crane viewing experience along the Platte River at sunset. This hands-on activity shows how conservation and tourism can work together to benefit both landowners and visitors.

“Nebraska farms and ranches have unique stories and landscapes that attract visitors from across the country,” organizers said. “This workshop is designed to provide practical tools and inspiration to help producers open their gates and welcome guests in a way that strengthens both their operations and rural communities.”

The cost to attend is $100 per person, and space is limited. Early registration is encouraged to secure a spot.
