Nebraska Explores Fiber Broadband for Smart Farming

Nebraska is exploring how better internet connections can help farms and rural communities use new technology. A recent Regional Fiber Connect event brought together agriculture leaders, policymakers, technology experts, and industry partners to discuss the growing role of fiber broadband.

The Fiber Broadband Association hosted the event, which focused on how strong internet connections can support digital agriculture, artificial intelligence, and rural economic development.

Marissa Mitrovich, Vice President of Public Policy of the Fiber Broadband Association, said, “Fiber is more than broadband—it is the foundation that enables AI adoption, precision agriculture, workforce development, and our next generation of business investment.”

The event also included a Fiber Policy Lab discussion called “Fiber to the Field: How Fiber Broadband is Powering Rural Innovation.” Participants discussed challenges related to expanding broadband service in rural areas and how better connections can support farming and local businesses.

Reliable broadband is becoming more important as farming uses more connected equipment and data. Precision agriculture can help farmers make better decisions about crops, soil, and farm resources. Artificial intelligence and robotics can also support farm work when reliable connections are available.

The conference examined several topics, including digital agriculture, AI and robotics, precision agriculture, connected farms, rural infrastructure, and economic development. These discussions showed that fiber networks can provide the speed, reliability, and capacity needed for modern farm technology.

Government and agriculture leaders also discussed the need for partnerships and investment to expand broadband access. Rural areas may face special challenges when building new fiber networks because farms and communities can be spread across large areas.

Speakers and participants included representatives from government, agriculture, technology, education, and broadband organizations. Their discussions highlighted the importance of working together to improve rural connectivity.
