Five students from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's PGA Golf Management program has earned national recognition through the PGA WORKS John and Tamara Lundgren Scholars Program.
The scholarships were presented to students pursuing PGA of America membership through one of 16 accredited PGA Golf Management university programs nationwide. Only 20 students received the scholarship this year, and five of those recipients came from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Each student received an $8,000 scholarship to support educational and professional growth within the golf industry.
The accomplishment reflects the dedication, hard work, and leadership shown by the selected students throughout their academic careers. It also demonstrates the quality of Nebraska’s PGA Golf Management program, which prepares students for careers in golf operations, business management, teaching, and industry leadership.
“We’re incredibly proud of these students and the accomplishments that earned them this scholarship,” said Joseph Canny, assistant professor of practice in Nebraska’s program. “Having five of the 20 recipients come from Nebraska speaks to the strength of our PGA Golf Management program and, more importantly, to the quality of the students who are part of it. We’re honored that they’re recognized with some of the country’s top talent.”
The scholarship recipients represent a variety of communities across the Midwest. The honored students include Addison Peck, a sophomore from Scottsbluff, Nebraska; Emersen Motl, a junior from Ames, Iowa; Reece Randall, a junior from Topeka, Kansas; Peyton Cusick, a senior from Ballwin, Missouri; and Mattie Weidenbach, a senior from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The PGA WORKS Scholars Program serves as an important workforce development initiative within the golf industry. The program is designed to provide opportunities for talented students from diverse backgrounds and help prepare future professionals for leadership positions. Students receiving the scholarship must be pursuing a bachelor's degree in a golf-related major while working toward PGA of America membership.
Since its launch in 2018, the PGA WORKS program has made a significant impact on student success. A total of 138 scholarships have been awarded, providing approximately $1.1 million in financial support. These scholarships help students continue their education while gaining the skills and experience necessary for long-term career success.
The University of Nebraska’s PGA Golf Management program has a strong history of preparing students for the golf industry. The program began in 2002 within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and has continued to grow over the years. Today, about 280 students are enrolled in the program, making it one of the university’s important specialized academic offerings.
Recipients are selected through a competitive process that considers many factors. Academic performance, leadership in school and community activities, work experience, honors and achievements, career goals, personal circumstances, and participation in the game of golf all contribute to the selection process. This approach helps identify students who demonstrate both professional potential and a commitment to leadership.
The scholarships also reflect the continued support of individuals and organizations that invest in education and workforce development within the golf profession.
