Nebraska Harvest Progress Slows as Rain Saturates

By Scout Nelson

Persistent rainfall and saturated field conditions continued to slow harvest activities across Nebraska during the week ending October 4, 2026, based on data from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), the USDA Farm Service Agency, Nebraska Extension and agricultural reporters across the state. Farmers averaged only three suitable days for fieldwork, limiting harvest progress and delaying winter wheat planting in many areas.

Excess moisture remained a significant challenge for producers, with soil moisture levels ranging from adequate to surplus in many locations. Wet conditions restricted field access and equipment movement, slowing seasonal agricultural work.

Nebraska's corn crop continued to mature near the five-year average, with 85% of the crop reaching maturity. However, only 15% of corn acres had been harvested, trailing the five-year average of 24%.

Soybean harvest remained well behind normal progress, with only 9% of acres harvested compared to the five-year average of 34%. About 90% of soybean fields had reached the leaf-dropping stage.

Winter wheat planting also lagged behind historical levels due to limited fieldwork opportunities. Approximately 64% of intended acreage had been planted, compared to the five-year average of 76%, while 38% of the crop had emerged.

Sorghum producers faced similar delays, with harvest progress reaching just 9%, compared to the five-year average of 17%. Crop maturity also remained slightly below typical levels.

Crop conditions generally remained stable despite the weather-related setbacks. Corn and soybean ratings were mostly fair to excellent, while sorghum conditions were more varied across the state.

Pasture and range conditions continued to present challenges, with a sizeable portion rated poor to very poor. Harvest progress in the coming weeks will depend largely on whether drier weather allows producers to return to fields and complete seasonal operations.
