Nebraska Organic Farming Event Offers Expert Insights

By Scout Nelson

Farmers, agricultural professionals and individuals interested in organic agriculture are invited to attend the 2026 Organic Conference on Nov. 4 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center (ENREEC) near Mead, Nebraska. Organized by Nebraska Extension, the event will bring together growers, researchers and industry experts for a day of learning, networking and discussion focused on organic farming.

The conference will provide research-based information and practical insights for both established organic producers and those considering a transition to organic production. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about current challenges and emerging opportunities in Nebraska's organic agriculture sector.

The free event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is supported by the USDA Transition to Organic Partnership Program and Nebraska Extension. Lunch will be provided, and advance registration is encouraged due to limited seating.

The educational program will begin with Joel Gruver of Western Illinois University, who will discuss crop rotations and holistic management strategies for building productive and resilient organic farming systems. James Schroepfer of Crop Fertility Services will also present on the relationship between soil health, soil fertility and nutrient management.

A panel of Nebraska organic growers will share firsthand experiences and practical perspectives on organic production. The discussion will focus on the opportunities and challenges producers face in the field.

Afternoon breakout sessions will allow participants to choose topics most relevant to their operations. Sessions will cover crop budgets, disease management in organic grains, insect management, grain marketing, organic certification and no-till corn production in living alfalfa systems.

Presenters from Nebraska Extension, the Rodale Institute, Clear Frontier and other agricultural organizations will lead the discussions, providing practical information that growers can apply to their operations. The conference is part of Nebraska Extension's ongoing efforts to support Nebraska's organic agriculture community through education, research and industry collaboration.
