Training Boosts Skills in Spray Technology

Training Boosts Skills in Spray Technology

By Scout Nelson

The Precision Application Technology (PAT) Lab at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s West Central Research, Extension and Education Center has launched the Precision Education in Spray Technologies (PEST) Academy, a new training program designed to build advanced skills in responsible and efficient pest management. The academy focuses on technical knowledge, hands-on practice, and science-based decision-making to support sustainable crop protection across the region.

Supported by the Nebraska Corn Board, the program strengthens the connection between classroom learning and real-world application. Participants learn how to apply pesticides accurately, evaluate data, and maintain regulatory compliance for safer and more effective field operations. As stated by a precision pesticide application specialist, “The PEST Academy empowers agricultural professionals to make data-driven, efficient, and environmentally responsible decisions that support sustainable crop production and long-term stewardship across Nebraska and beyond.”

The academy provides more than 16 hours of professional instruction for private applicators, custom applicators, crop consultants, and other agriculture professionals. Learning opportunities offered include:

  • Guidance on label interpretation
  • Hands-on spray training
  • Enhanced understanding of spray additives
  • Data-driven tools and evaluations

After completing the academy, participants may earn a University of Nebraska–Lincoln micro-credential along with Nebraska Department of Agriculture recertification credits in categories 00 and 01. Enrollment is limited to 35 participants per session, and the first 35 applicants will receive free registration.

The PEST Academy sessions will be held at the PAT Lab in North Platte on the following dates:

  • Session 1: Dec. 10–11, 2025
  • Session 2: Dec. 22–23, 2025
  • Session 3: Jan. 15–16, 2026
  • Session 4: Feb. 10–11, 2026
  • Session 5: March 10–11, 2026
  • Session 6: April 8–9, 2026

The academy aims to improve precision, reduce environmental impact, and support long-term stewardship in modern pest management. Additional information and registration details are available on the WCREEC website.
