Spur Ventures, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln initiative, is helping strengthen Nebraska's agricultural technology ecosystem by connecting producers, entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and students. The organization will showcase its collaborative approach during the AgConverge 2026 Conference, scheduled for November,17-18,2026, in Grand Island.
Launched in 2025, Spur Ventures operates within the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Department of Biological Systems Engineering and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Its mission is to support the development, validation, and commercialization of agricultural innovations while fostering connections across the ag tech sector.
Leadership at Spur Ventures believes Nebraska has strong agricultural and technological resources but has lacked a central hub that brings stakeholders together. To address this need, the organization provides networking, education, and partnership opportunities that encourage innovation and business growth.
A recent assessment conducted by Spur Ventures identified challenges within Nebraska's ag tech landscape, particularly around access to early-stage investment. In response, the organization continues to work with accelerators, investors, and business support organizations across Nebraska and the Midwest to help startups access resources and funding.
One of the featured events at AgConverge 2026 will be the Farm Tech Adoption Challenge, which gives farmers and ranchers an active role in evaluating emerging technologies. Startup companies will present their innovations to producer panels, who will assess practical factors such as usability, affordability, and compatibility with farming operations.
The challenge is designed to ensure agricultural technologies are developed with direct input from the people who will use them. Participating producer panels will provide feedback to startups, helping developers better understand real-world farming needs. The event will award $6,000 in prizes to the top producer panels.
Students will also have significant opportunities to participate in the conference. AgConverge will feature undergraduate and graduate student poster competitions with $1,000 in prizes, along with networking opportunities involving industry professionals, researchers, and entrepreneurs.
In addition to conference activities, Spur Ventures promotes entrepreneurship education through programs that combine agricultural engineering and business development. Students work directly with farmers to develop solutions for real agricultural challenges.
The conference will also include discussions on women in agricultural technology, industry-academia collaboration, ag robotics demonstrations, NSF Innovation Engine partnerships, and the future of the Midwest bioeconomy.
Beyond AgConverge, Spur Ventures supports innovation through its Spur Validation Sandbox Program, which independently evaluates emerging agricultural technologies. The program provides transparent assessments that help startups build credibility while giving producers reliable information to guide technology adoption.
