The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Crops Judging Team took third place overall in the Regional Crops Judging Contest at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas, Feb. 24. Will Stalder, an agronomy major, placed eighth overall as an individual.
Nebraska’s team includes plant and landscape system majors Ashton Boehm, Kailey Ziegler, Daniel Frey, Thayer Jonak and Zach Nienhueser, and agronomy majors Stalder, Logan Nelson and Clinton Turnbull. Don Lee, a professor in agronomy and horticulture, and Garrett Kuss, a plant biology alumnus and graduate student in the Doctor of Plant Health program, coach and advise the team.
Six teams competed in the contest and included the winner Kansas State University, Iowa State University, Nebraska, Oklahoma Panhandle State University, West Texas A&M University and Oklahoma State University. The competition consisted of timed tests in subjects including weed and crop identification, math, general knowledge and lab practical skills.
