The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reported that Nebraska crops continue to make steady progress during the week ending August 2.
Soybean pod set moves ahead of both last year and the five-year average, while corn development remains close to normal despite continued dry weather. Farmers have 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the reporting week.
Dry conditions continue to reduce soil moisture across much of Nebraska. Topsoil moisture is rated 33% very short, 37% short, 29% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture is rated 38% very short, 35% short, 26% adequate, and 1% surplus.
Corn
- Silking: 89%, ahead of 86% last year but slightly behind the 91% five-year average.
- Dough: 38%, matching the five-year average and slightly ahead of 37% last year.
- Dented:1%, equal to last year and just behind the 2% average.
- Condition: 5% very poor, 12% poor, 29% fair, 42% good, and 12% excellent.
Soybean
- Blooming: 90%, ahead of 81% last year and 89% for the five-year average.
- Setting pod: 61%, ahead of 53% last year and slightly above the 60% average.
- Condition: 3% very poor, 8% poor, 32% fair, 47% good, and 10% excellent.
Sorghum
- Headed: 51%, slightly behind 53% last year but ahead of the 49% average.
- Coloring: 5%, equal to last year and ahead of the 3% average.
- Condition: 2% very poor, 16% poor, 38% fair, 41% good, and 3% excellent.
Winter wheat
- Harvest: 96%, ahead of 90% last year and the 91% five-year average.
Oat
- Harvested: 80%, well ahead of 74% last year and close to the 81% average.
- Condition: 14% very poor, 41% poor, 33% fair, 11% good, and 1% excellent.
Pasture and range
- Condition: 44% very poor, 27% poor, 22% fair, 7% good, and 0% excellent.
