Farmers, crop consultants, researchers, and agricultural professionals are invited to attend the 2026 Nebraska Flame Weeding Workshop on Aug. 20 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center (ENREEC) near Mead, Nebraska. The event will focus on propane-powered flame weeding and its use as an alternative weed management tool in crop production.
Hosted by the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, the workshop will feature hands-on training and field demonstrations based on more than 15 years of university research. Participants will learn about propane application rates, crop tolerance to flaming, and research findings involving more than 20 weed species.
Attendees will see live demonstrations of four-row flame weeders equipped with patented hood systems for broadcast and banded applications. Demonstrations will showcase flame weeding in corn and soybean fields at different crop growth stages.
The program will provide weed management recommendations for several crops, including field corn, sweet corn, popcorn, soybean, sorghum, sunflower, wheat, and alfalfa. Local organic producers will also discuss how flame weeding fits into their weed control programs.
Presentations will be led by Stevan Knezevic, professor of agronomy and horticulture, and George Gogos, professor of mechanical engineering. Their collaborative research has resulted in numerous publications and the development of a patented flame weeding system.
Workshop attendance is limited to 40 participants, and registration costs $150 per person. The fee includes workshop materials, lunch, and a copy of the flame weeding manual.
The event will be held at ENREEC, 1071 Co Rd G, Ithaca, Nebraska, and is designed to provide practical, research-based guidance for producers interested in alternative weed management strategies.
