NEBRASKA WEATHER

Nebraska Forecast Calls for Heat Then Rain

Nebraska Forecast Calls for Heat Then Rain

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska’s weather is finally turning around. As an upper-level low exits the Upper Midwest, sunshine and warmer temperatures are expected to return starting tomorrow. Highs will reach the upper 70s to low 80s with light winds, offering a great start to the weekend.

Saturday will be even warmer, especially in eastern Nebraska, where highs may reach the upper 80s. A short wave could bring scattered afternoon showers or storms east of Highway 281, though rainfall amounts should remain light. Temperatures across the state will stay high into Sunday and Monday, with some areas in the east and southwest reaching 90°F.

This warmer stretch is great news for Nebraska crops, which have been lagging in heat unit accumulation due to recent cool conditions.

However, rain is on the horizon. By late Monday, a surface low forming near the Front Range will move into western Nebraska. This system could bring thunderstorms to the Panhandle, some potentially severe, spreading across central and eastern Nebraska by Tuesday. Moisture from the Gulf and possibly from Tropical Storm Alvin may enhance rainfall totals, especially in the northwest and southeast.

While the southwest may miss heavier rain, most other areas could receive over half an inch.

A cold front will pass Tuesday night, bringing cooler, drier air on Wednesday. By Thursday, more rain may return if a southwestern U.S. trough connects with another system from Canada. This could lead to significant precipitation in eastern Nebraska by Thursday night into Friday.

Looking ahead, warm conditions may return by late next week, but another cold front is expected around June 8. This could lower temperatures again and bring more moisture to the state.

Overall, Nebraska's upcoming forecast offers much-needed warmth and potential rain support for agricultural progress.
