The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory (GSL) will host its annual open house on August 19 near Whitman, Nebraska. The event will bring together cattle producers, ranchers, and industry professionals to learn about the latest developments in beef production and ranch management.
Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. Mountain Time, followed by a weather outlook presentation. Attendees will also have opportunities to interact with University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers, educators, and specialists throughout the day.
Interactive sessions will showcase ongoing research focused on improving beef cattle production and ranch sustainability.
Participants will gain insights into studies being conducted in the Nebraska Sandhills and their practical applications for ranch operations.
A featured presentation by Nicki Nimlos, a rangeland management specialist with the University of Wyoming Extension, will explore carbon markets and potential opportunities for ranchers and landowners. The discussion will focus on how these emerging markets may support both profitability and land stewardship.
The program will also include a cattle market update and a producer panel discussing the challenges and opportunities facing ranch operations in 2026. These sessions are intended to provide valuable perspectives on industry trends and economic conditions.
Attendance is free, and lunch will be sponsored by Merck Animal Health. Participants are encouraged to RSVP by August 14 to help organizers finalize meal plans.
Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory, located across Grant, Hooker, and Cherry counties, serves as a leading research center in the Nebraska Sandhills. The facility focuses on developing environmentally and economically sustainable production systems while sharing research findings with producers and agricultural stakeholders.
