Nebraska Extension is hosting its Introductory Level Crop Scout Training workshop on Tuesday, May 20, at the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center near Mead, Nebraska. The full-day event runs from 8:55 a.m. to 5:10 p.m., with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Designed for entry-level scouts, the workshop is ideal for those working with crop consultants, agronomists, or service centers. It’s also suitable for growers who scout their own fields and students preparing for careers in agribusiness.
“We look forward to providing participants a hands-on, in-person experience focusing on important crop scouting skills,” said Extension Educator Aaron Nygren.
Participants will gain practical knowledge through field-based instruction on the following topics:
- Scouting tips and techniques
- Corn and soybean growth and development
- Identification of crop diseases
- Weed ID using morphology and seedling keys
- Corn and soybean insect scouting and management
- Nutrient deficiencies in crops
- Field practice activities
Attendees often praise the workshop for its real-world application and interactive format. The training helps boost scouting confidence and improve in-field decision-making.
The cost for the program is $115, which includes lunch, breaks, all materials, and a detailed three-ring binder with scouting references. For those who choose not to take the manual, registration is $75. Pre-registration is required to ensure materials are available.
Continuing education credits for Certified Crop Advisors are being applied for, including six credits in pest management, one in crop management, and 0.5 in fertility/nutrient management.
This training is an excellent opportunity for participants to build essential crop scouting skills and improve their contributions to crop health and productivity.
