Celebrate Beef Month with Local Giving

Celebrate Beef Month with Local Giving

By Scout Nelson

In honor of National Beef Month, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Loeffel Meat Shoppe is running a special “buy one, give one” promotion. For every pound of ground beef sold through May 30, the shop will donate one pound to local organizations that assist people facing food insecurity.

The shop offers frozen ground beef in one-pound and two-pound chubs, priced at $4.34 and $8.38. The effort is aimed at supporting the local community while encouraging more people to enjoy Nebraska beef.

“We spent some time earlier this year meeting with local organizations to discuss ways we could collaborate to help serve our community,” said Jordan Wicks, a Nebraska Extension meat specialist. “We normally offer beef promotions in May, so this year we decided to put a different spin on it to help us, and our customers support our community.”

More than 43,000 people in Lancaster County are considered food insecure, and this initiative aims to make a difference by sharing locally produced food with those in need.

The Loeffel Meat Shoppe is also participating in the Nebraska “Good Life, Great Steaks” Beef Passport program. From May 1 to September 30, customers can earn points by purchasing beef items at any of the 59 participating locations across Nebraska. Points can be exchanged for prizes, and each check-in also counts as an entry into drawings for beef bundles.

Located on the university’s East Campus, the shop sells fresh and frozen meats and is staffed by students who gain hands-on experience in processing and product development. Their creations include the award-winning jalapeño popper bratwurst.

Retail sales help support academic programs in the Department of Animal Science. The shop is open Tuesdays and Fridays, and during East Campus Discovery Days in June, July, and August.
