Pollinators play an important role in farming and ecosystems. Bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects help many fruits, vegetables, seeds, and specialty crops produce food. They also support biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Protecting these insects helps farms remain productive and support the environment.
Jade "Jae" Horn - Graduate Student, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, and Josh Villazana - Pesticide Safety Education Program Coordinator, Extension Educator, highlighted practical ways growers and pesticide applicators can reduce risks to pollinators. Their guidance shows that careful planning can protect pollinators while keeping pest control effective.
Pesticides can reach pollinators in several ways. Exposure may happen through direct spray, residues on flowering plants, contaminated pollen or nectar, nesting materials, and spray drift.
Risk depends on the pesticide, its toxicity, application timing, weather, equipment setup, and nearby flowering plants.
The pesticide label is an important part of pollinator protection. Labels contain legally required directions and safety measures. Farmers and applicators should read the label before every application and follow all instructions.
Timing also matters. Bees and many other pollinators are most active when flowers are available. Applications should avoid active bloom periods whenever possible.
Evening or nighttime applications can reduce exposure because pollinator activity is usually lower. Weather conditions must still be checked because wind and temperature changes can increase drift.
Spray drift can carry pesticides beyond the intended field. Applicators can reduce drift by using suitable nozzles, maintaining proper boom height, selecting appropriate droplet sizes, adjusting spray pressure, and avoiding applications during temperature inversions. Removing flowering weeds may also help when it is safe and appropriate.
Communication with nearby beekeepers adds another layer of protection. Early notice can give beekeepers time to use protective measures for their hives.
Integrated pest management, or IPM, can further reduce unnecessary pesticide use.
