The Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute (DWFI) at the University of Nebraska hosted a delegation of Ukrainian water managers, agricultural leaders, and irrigation stakeholders to explore irrigation technologies and agricultural practices that could support Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts. The visit focused on strengthening business partnerships and identifying solutions to modernize the country’s damaged irrigation infrastructure.
As part of the program, delegates toured University of Nebraska research facilities, met with government officials, and visited Nebraska-based irrigation manufacturers. The delegation examined how Nebraska’s expertise in water management, precision agriculture, and irrigation technology could help improve agricultural productivity and resilience in Ukraine.
Ukraine has significant irrigation potential but has experienced major infrastructure losses due to years of deterioration and war-related damage. Restoring irrigation systems is considered critical for strengthening food production, supporting rural communities, and improving long-term agricultural sustainability.
Ukraine is also advancing farmer-led water management reforms through Water Users Organizations (WUOs), which are taking greater responsibility for irrigation and drainage systems. These reforms aim to improve efficiency, encourage local decision-making, and attract private investment in agricultural infrastructure.
During the 10-day visit, delegates met with leaders from companies including Valmont Industries, Lindsay Corporation, Reinke Manufacturing, 360 Rain, T-L Irrigation, and Agri Drain. The group evaluated irrigation equipment, toured manufacturing facilities, and explored technologies that could help address Ukraine’s current and future agricultural needs.
The University of Nebraska and DWFI highlighted Nebraska’s role as a global center for irrigation innovation and water management expertise. Organizers noted that the relationships established during the visit could support future technology adoption, investment opportunities, and agricultural recovery efforts in Ukraine.
