UNL Forecast Shows Mixed Corn Yield Outlook Across Corn Belt

Corn across much of the U.S. Corn Belt has entered the grain-filling stage, with weather conditions continuing to shape final yield potential. Researchers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) used the Hybrid-Maize crop model to evaluate crop development and forecast end-of-season yields at 43 locations across the Corn Belt.

Recent weather patterns have varied across the region. Above-average temperatures, especially warmer nighttime conditions, were recorded across central, western, and northern areas, increasing crop respiration and potentially reducing grain-filling duration and yield potential.

Rainfall has been uneven during recent weeks. Below-average precipitation was reported in parts of North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri, while northeastern Kansas received above-average rainfall, creating different yield outlooks across production areas.

Corn development remains largely on schedule. Fields in Kansas, western Missouri, and southern Illinois have reached the dent stage, while much of the Corn Belt is in the dough stage. Some locations in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and North Dakota remain in earlier grain-filling stages.

Forecasts for irrigated corn suggest near-average to below-average yields across much of Nebraska and Kansas. Elevated nighttime temperatures during flowering and early grain fill have reduced the likelihood of above-average yields in many irrigated fields.

Rainfed corn conditions are more favorable across the central and eastern Corn Belt. Locations throughout Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Missouri continue to show a strong potential for near-average yields, supported by adequate moisture earlier in the growing season.

The outlook becomes less favorable across portions of the western Corn Belt. Areas of western and southeastern Nebraska, southwest Iowa, and northern Minnesota face a higher risk of below-average yields because of limited rainfall and increasing moisture stress.

According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Hybrid-Maize forecasting team, late-season weather will be critical. Temperature and rainfall during the remainder of the grain-filling period will largely determine whether corn yields finish near, above, or below long-term averages across the region.
