University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension researchers are studying whether residual herbicides alone can provide season-long control of Palmer amaranth, a highly competitive weed that continues to challenge sorghum producers. The research aims to identify effective management strategies that help growers protect yields and reduce weed pressure throughout the growing season.
The project is featured in the latest episode of N Field Observations and is led by Amit Jhala, Nebraska Extension Weed Management Specialist, along with graduate student Sai Madala. Their work focuses on evaluating how different residual herbicide programs perform under field conditions and how application timing affects weed control.
Researchers are comparing overlapping residual herbicide programs designed to prevent Palmer amaranth from becoming established in sorghum fields. By testing multiple approaches, the team hopes to determine which strategies provide the most consistent and long-lasting weed suppression.
A major focus of the study is the timing of herbicide applications. The researchers are examining whether properly timed treatments can extend residual activity and improve control effectiveness as the growing season progresses.
Field demonstrations allow growers and industry professionals to observe treatment results firsthand. Side-by-side plot comparisons highlight differences in weed control performance, providing practical information that producers can use when making management decisions.
