EPA Review Shapes Pesticide Use Rules

EPA Review Shapes Pesticide Use Rules

By Scout Nelson

The Environmental Protection Agency highlights that the registration review of chlorpyrifos is still in progress, with new decisions expected in the coming years. The agency plans to release an updated review for public comment in 2026, followed by an interim decision to guide future use.

At present, chlorpyrifos use is highly restricted. The agency allows only a limited number of applications while it continues to study the pesticide’s safety and environmental impact. A major decision made in December 2024 removed tolerance levels for most food and feed crops, significantly reducing its use.

Only 11 food-related uses remain approved, and these are limited to specific states. These restrictions aim to balance agricultural needs with health and environmental concerns. Farmers must follow strict guidelines when using chlorpyrifos to ensure safe and approved practices.

In states like Nebraska, the use of chlorpyrifos is limited to a few crops, including alfalfa, soybean, and both spring and winter wheat. Other crops such as apples, citrus, cotton, peaches, and sugar beets are also approved for use, but only in certain states listed by regulators.

The review process is important because it helps determine whether the pesticide meets modern safety standards. It also ensures that its use does not harm human health, animals, or the environment. As new scientific data becomes available, the agency updates its decisions to reflect the latest findings.

Farmers and agricultural professionals are encouraged to stay informed about these changes. Understanding current regulations helps them make better decisions about crop protection and compliance.

Looking ahead, the upcoming review decisions will play a key role in shaping how chlorpyrifos is used in agriculture. These updates are expected to provide clearer guidance for farmers while supporting safe and responsible pesticide use across the country.

More information about the regulations for the use of chlorpyriphos can be found on EPA’s website.
