Cover crops can improve soil health and farm sustainability, and a Cover Crop Field Day on Aug. 13 near Bladen, Nebraska, will provide hands-on training for farmers, agronomists and conservation professionals. The event will focus on practical cover crop management techniques, soil health assessments and conservation planning.
Hosted at Green Cover Farm from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., participants will take part in field demonstrations and interactive learning sessions. Topics will include cover crop identification, species selection, mix design and strategies for integrating cover crops into farming operations.
Morning activities will feature an overview of Green Cover's demonstration plots and discussions on soil health management. Attendees will learn how to select cover crop species and develop custom mixes to meet specific production and conservation goals.
Afternoon sessions will cover the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Cover Crop Standard (340) and related program requirements. Additional field-based instruction will focus on soil management practices, cover crop mixtures and identification skills.
The event is being hosted through a partnership between Nebraska Extension, Green Cover, USDA NRCS and the Midwest Cover Crops Council. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available for certified crop advisors.
Attendance is free, and lunch will be provided. Registration is encouraged as participation is limited to 50 attendees.
