Nebraska Farmers to See Major Income Growth

Nebraska Farmers to See Major Income Growth

By Scout Nelson

Nebraska’s net farm income is forecast to rise by 55% in 2025, reaching $9.42 billion—the highest nominal level ever for the state, according to a new report. The Spring 2025 Nebraska Farm Income Outlook was developed by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the University of Missouri.

The increase is driven mainly by a $1.58 billion rise in direct government payments, which are expected to account for 17% of the total net income. Higher cash receipts from livestock and crop insurance will also contribute, offsetting declines in crop sales. Total farm receipts are projected to increase to $33.37 billion.

“Positive profit margins in livestock production and one-time government payments will support farm liquidity in calendar year 2025,” said the director of the Rural and Farm Finance Policy Analysis Center. “Managing liquidity smartly will be key to protect farm operations from headwinds in 2026.”

While Nebraska’s income is projected to rise 55%, the national forecast shows a 30% increase. Experts warn that unexpected policy changes or market shifts could alter these projections.

“Crop economics and livestock economics seem to be going in different directions at the moment,” a Nebraska policy specialist stated. “But it’s one-time government assistance payments that dominate the current financial projections.”

Key projections include a 2% drop in crop receipts, despite increased production. Corn and soybean revenues are expected to fall by $84 million and $86 million, respectively. Wheat receipts are also projected to decline by 3%. In contrast, hay prices may rise due to reduced acreage, and broiler receipts could increase by over 10%.

Production expenses are expected to hold steady at $27.22 billion. The full report and additional resources are available at the Center for Agricultural Profitability’s website.
