A recent reflection from the Nebraska Soil Health Coalition highlights the perspective of a retired Professor of Practice from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln who has witnessed more than sixty harvest seasons across the state.

Over the past several decades, Nebraska agriculture has shifted in many ways. Major advancements in seed genetics have strengthened plant performance, improved resilience, and increased yield potential.
Machinery has become larger, faster and more precise, allowing producers to plant and harvest within increasingly tight weather windows. These advancements have helped modern operations respond more effectively to changing conditions.
Alongside progress, new challenges have emerged. Soil loss, compaction, and declining organic matter continue to pressure long-term productivity. Weather has also become less predictable, creating uncertainty during planting, growing, and harvesting seasons. Yet despite these challenges, the retired professor emphasizes that two elements remain unchanged: “the soil beneath our feet and the weather above it.”
His message underscores a lasting truth. While technology will continue to evolve, strong soil health practices remain essential for sustaining Nebraska agriculture. He highlights practical strategies such as covering crops, no-till methods, and thoughtful crop rotations. These tools help protect soil structure, hold moisture, support microorganisms, and build resilience for years ahead.
