Nebraska Program Buys Local Farm Food

Nebraska Program Buys Local Farm Food

By Scout Nelson

The Center for Rural Affairs is inviting food producers in central Nebraska to take part in a unique opportunity that supports both farmers and local communities. With nearly $150,000 in available funds, the organization will purchase locally grown and produced food from April to August. The food will then be donated to food pantries and institutions that serve residents in need.

“This is a great opportunity for producers who have extra produce this summer or are looking for an extra stream of income,” said Angelyn Wang, local foods associate with the Center. “This project ensures that community members are getting fresh, local food during garden season.”

The program accepts a wide variety of products, including fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy, honey, maple syrup, and grains such as buckwheat. Eligible producers must be located within 400 miles of the distribution points, which include food pantries and institutions in Custer, Blaine, Dawson, Loup, Adams, Hall, Buffalo, Garfield, Wheeler, Valley, Greeley, and Sherman counties.

This initiative is part of the Local Foods Purchase Assistance (LFPA) program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. While similar funds in other states were recently revoked, the funding for this Nebraska-based project is confirmed and secure.

Volunteers are also needed to help transport food from producers to the distribution sites. This helps ensure timely delivery and supports smooth operations.

Interested producers can apply or find more information by visiting cfra.org/local-food-central-NE. This program not only supports local agriculture but also strengthens food security in rural communities.
