Nebraska Rural Poll Celebrates Thirty Years

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Rural Poll celebrates its 30th year as the nation’s longest-running survey focused on rural communities. Conducted by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the poll collects data to help state leaders, researchers, and communities understand rural challenges and strengths.

Since 1996, the poll has gathered insights on job security, economic conditions, education, health care, and more. It adapts over time to reflect the changing needs of Nebraska’s rural areas. The 2024 survey is now available online and by mail, with a new interactive map platform offering access to localized data.

The Rural Poll has been a key tool in shaping policy and community projects. It provides reliable data used in grant writing, economic development planning, and legislative decisions.

“The Rural Poll has always provided a basis of information that we can use to better understand what is happening in rural Nebraska,” said a community leader.

Key 2024 findings include:

  • Green spaces remain important: 80% of respondents were satisfied with open space access, down slightly from 90% in 1996.
  • Economic challenges grow: 33% said their financial situation is worse than five years ago, the highest level of economic concern reported.
  • Job security improves: 68% feel secure in their jobs, up from 63% in 1996.
  • With the new All Things Nebraska platform, users can now view 2024 poll results by region and topic. Historical data will be added over time to support long-term planning.

“Data can be a powerful tool to start community-wide conversations,” said a Nebraska community foundation leader.

This year’s poll continues to strengthen the role of rural communities in shaping Nebraska’s future.
