The Nebraska Soybean Board (NSB) participated in the Nebraska State Fire School expo earlier this month in Grand Island to promote SoyFoam TF 1122, a soy-based firefighting foam. Partnering with Cross Plains Solutions, NSB shared the benefits of this innovative foam with fire departments across the state.
At the event, NSB distributed 15 sample pails of SoyFoam to fire departments and plans to deliver more samples later this year. The foam is made from soy meal and flour, byproducts of soybean processing, and is certified as 84% biobased by the USDA BioPreferred program. It is also certified ready to be biodegradable.
SoyFoam is free from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), harmful chemicals found in traditional firefighting foams. PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” do not break down in the environment and are linked to serious health risks including liver disease, low birth weight, and cancer.
“With support from NSB, we had the chance to engage firefighters across Nebraska and explain how soybeans can help put out fires while keeping first responders and our communities safe,” said Dave Garlie, chief technology officer for Cross Plains Solutions.
SoyFoam works as a wetting and smothering agent and can be used to put out both Class A and Class B fires. It fits with current firefighting equipment and requires no special training or modifications. It also meets the National Fire Protection Association’s wetting agent standard (NFPA 18).
Importantly, SoyFoam is the only firefighting foam in the world to earn Greenscreen Certified GOLD status, further highlighting its safety and environmental value.
The Nebraska Soybean Board continues to promote products that are safe, renewable, and beneficial to rural communities.
