Scientists Warn of Genetic Gap in Corn

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign study highlights the importance of preserving and expanding genetic diversity to ensure corn remains productive, resilient, and capable of meeting growing global food demands. Researchers believe that introducing new genetic resources into breeding programs can help secure future progress in hybrid corn development.

Genetic diversity is essential for crop improvement because it provides breeders with the traits needed to develop stronger, higher-yielding varieties. When diversity declines, opportunities for future improvements become more limited.

The study focused on breeding groups that have formed the foundation of modern corn hybrid development for many years. Scientists found that one widely used group showed very little genetic variation related to grain yield, particularly among intermediate-maturity lines that dominate production in many major corn-growing regions.

To reach their conclusions, researchers evaluated breeding material representing different maturity categories and measured traits such as grain yield, plant height, and flowering characteristics. Their analysis revealed that yield-related diversity was especially low within one important breeding population.

The findings suggest that future breeding efforts could face challenges if genetic resources continue to shrink. Reduced diversity may limit the development of hybrids capable of handling climate pressures, pests, diseases, and evolving production demands.

The research was supported by a collaborative initiative that brought together breeding programs from across North America. Scientists studied over 160 hybrid combinations grown in diverse environments to gain a better understanding of existing genetic resources.

While the results serve as an important warning, researchers do not believe corn breeding is at risk of stopping progress. Several breeding groups still contain valuable diversity, and experts say additional genetic material can be introduced to strengthen breeding programs.
