The Nebraska Soil Health School, led by Dr. Bijesh Maharjan from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, reached a major milestone in February 2025 by transitioning into an on-demand program that travels directly to local communities.
This unique model allows university experts to bring personalized soil health education to producers based on local needs. “We were very excited to introduce this ‘on-demand’ approach, which brings university faculty directly to communities instead of traditional extension-hosted events,” Maharjan said.
With support from UNL, USDA NRCS, and regional partners, the school recently hosted a two-day session in Brunswick, Nebraska. The session was requested by industry partners who wanted to provide soil health education for corn producers involved in poultry feed supply.
“We recognize that soil health is fundamental to regenerative agriculture and the quality of our supply chain,” said Efurd. “By improving soil health practices with our corn producers, we can create positive environmental change at a much larger scale.”
The event featured expert presentations from university faculty, NRCS professionals, and soil health advocates. Topics included no-till systems, equipment use, biochar application, livestock interactions, NRCS programs, and the economic impacts of soil health practices.
“This educational event gives our contracted farmers the specific knowledge they need to implement regenerative practices effectively,” Efurd said.
The format allowed attendees to engage in discussions, share experiences, and network with peers. “This small group setting on the customers ‘turf’ made the interaction so much more valuable,” said Meuret.
Maharjan emphasized that collaboration and long-standing partnerships make the on-demand model possible. “These kinds of ‘on-demand’ extension events require a collaborative approach based on longstanding relationships among faculty,” he said.
The Nebraska Soil Health School continues to expand its reach and impact across the state.
