Summer Soybean Institute 2024 - A boost for ag education

By Scout Nelson

The Nebraska Soybean Board is set to enhance agricultural education with its sponsorship of the 2024 Summer Soybean Institute (SSI). This unique educational initiative invites twenty middle and high school teachers to immerse themselves in the world of soybeans.

The event, organized in partnership with the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) and local teacher leader collaboratives, will unfold over two sessions: May 29-30 and July 16-18.

SSI's mission is to empower educators with a deep understanding of soybeans, highlighting their significance to Nebraska's agriculture.

Through interactive sessions led by CASNR content experts, the Nebraska Soybean Board, and teacher leaders, participants will explore the multifaceted role of soybeans in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields as well as in economics and business education.

Program Highlights:

Cross-Curricular Learning: The institute encourages applications from teacher teams across different subjects to demonstrate soybeans' relevance beyond traditional agricultural studies.

Stipends and Bonuses: Educators completing the program receive a $1,050 stipend, a $250 lesson plan implementation bonus, and up to $1,000 for classroom supplies.

Locations: Sessions take place at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte and the FEWS2 Hub in Lincoln.

Past participants have praised the program as a transformative educational experience, highlighting its practical and engaging approach to learning about soybeans, genetics, plant growth, and modern farming practices.

The deadline for registration is March 18, with a preference for interdisciplinary teacher teams. This approach aims to showcase the wide-ranging impact of soybeans across various curricula, promoting a holistic view of agriculture in education.

Supported by the Nebraska Soybean Board and Nebraska Extension, the Summer Soybean Institute 2024 represents a significant opportunity for educators. It promises to enhance teaching methods, foster innovative classroom activities, and deepen the understanding of agriculture's vital role in society.
