Trade and climate in agriculture policies

Trade and climate in agriculture policies

By Scout Nelson

Agriculture is Nebraska’s largest industry, and different presidential administrations can have varying effects on it. A key agriculture leader recently highlighted significant policy differences between the Biden-Harris administration and the former Trump-Pence administration, particularly in areas such as competition and climate change.

On competition in the agricultural marketplace, the leader gave the Biden administration high marks for addressing the issue, while giving the Trump administration much lower grades. "In the competition arena, you got to give the Biden administration an A or an A+. I give the former Trump administration somewhere between an F and a D- on competition," the leader remarked.

Regarding climate change, the leader pointed out the stark contrast between the two administrations. While the Biden administration has taken steps to address climate change, the former administration’s denial of the issue raised concerns about environmental impacts. He emphasized the need to rethink energy production and invest in renewable energy to minimize carbon emissions.

Trade and tariffs also present differences in approach. While there was some support for the "big picture" goals of the Trump administration's tariffs, its unilateral approach toward China was seen as ineffective. The leader noted that the Biden administration’s strategy has been more selective and measured, involving informed public officials to guide decisions.

One of the current pressing concerns for the agriculture industry is the delay in passing the Farm Bill, which was already a year overdue as of September. This failure to pass the bill raises uncertainty and challenges for farmers and the agriculture sector.

These ongoing discussions reflect the importance of thoughtful, informed policies to support the agriculture industry in Nebraska and beyond.
