USDA Helps Nebraska Recover from Wildfires

By Scout Nelson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has designated four Nebraska counties as natural disaster areas following damage caused by wildfires and high winds. The designation allows eligible agricultural producers to apply for emergency financial assistance through the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA).

The disaster declaration provides emergency loan opportunities for farmers and ranchers working to recover from losses caused by the disaster. These loans help producers restore normal operations and rebuild after severe weather events affect agricultural businesses.

Emergency loans may be used for several important recovery needs. Eligible producers can replace damaged equipment, purchase livestock, reorganize farming operations, repair disaster-related losses, or refinance certain existing debts related to their agricultural businesses.

The Farm Service Agency reviews each loan application individually. Approval depends on the amount of damage experienced, the available security offered by the applicant, and the producer's ability to repay the loan over time.

The disaster designation covers Garden, Grant, Lincoln, and Morrill counties as the primary eligible counties in Nebraska. Producers operating in these areas may qualify for emergency assistance if they meet USDA program requirements.

The designation also makes producers in neighboring counties eligible for assistance. Contiguous counties include Arthur, Banner, Box Butte, Cherry, Cheyenne, Custer, Dawson, Deuel, Frontier, Hayes, Hooker, Keith, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Scotts Bluff, and Sheridan.

Wildfires and high winds can cause major damage to crops, livestock, fencing, buildings, equipment, and other farm resources. Access to emergency financing helps producers begin recovery while maintaining the long-term stability of their agricultural operations.

Farmers and ranchers affected by the disaster are encouraged to contact their local USDA Farm Service Agency office to learn about available assistance programs and begin the application process.

The application deadline for emergency loans under this disaster designation is March 6, 2027. Producers should apply before the deadline and provide the necessary documentation to support their applications.
