For the week ending October 6, 2024, there were 6.9 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This period of suitable weather allowed farmers to engage in various activities, including harvesting and tillage.
Topsoil moisture supplies are concerning, with 36% rated very short, 40% short, 23% adequate, and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies reflect similar challenges, with 30% very short, 43% short, 26% adequate, and 1% surplus. These moisture levels can significantly impact crop yields as the season progresses.
Field Crops Report:
Corn conditions are mixed, rated at 4% very poor, 8% poor, 21% fair, 46% good, and 21% excellent. Corn in the mature stage reached 88%, which is slightly below last year’s 92% and near the five-year average of 87%. The percentage of corn harvested stands at 27%, which is close to last year’s 29% and ahead of the 24% average.
Soybeans showed considerable progress, with conditions rated 3% very poor, 8% poor, 25% fair, 48% good, and 16% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 96%, near last year’s 97% and the 94% average. The harvested soybean percentage is at 46%, comparable to last year’s 45% and above the 42% average.
Winter wheat planting progressed to 87%, like last year’s 88% and the 84% average. However, emergence lagged at 37%, well behind last year’s 57% and the 46% average.
Sorghum conditions were rated at 1% very poor, 3% poor, 19% fair, 49% good, and 28% excellent. Sorghum maturity reached 79%, which is close to last year’s 78% and equal to the average. The harvested sorghum percentage stands at 16%, nearly matching last year’s 17% and the average.
For dry edible beans, 92% are dropping leaves, which is close to last year’s 94% and the 96% average. The harvested percentage is at 76%, significantly ahead of last year’s 63% and near the 74% average.
