Vietnam's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Le Minh Hoan, recently met with Governor Jim Pillen of Nebraska State, United States, to discuss and promote collaboration in agricultural science, technology, and trade. With a decade-long trade relationship already established, the two sides aim to further enhance their ties.
Nebraska, renowned for its robust agricultural sector, has emerged as a key supplier of animal feed ingredients to Vietnam, as per World Bank statistics. The state's total export turnover to Vietnam is projected to reach $86.3 million in 2022, with soybeans and cattle being the most valuable exports.
In Vietnam's Strategy for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development, the focus lies on renewing the crop structure, flexible land use, and developing commodities with comparative advantages and high demand. Furthermore, the strategy aims to ensure domestic food requirements, promote livestock products, and foster the development of new specialties, such as medicinal plants and edible mushrooms.
Minister Le Minh Hoan highlighted the potential for cooperation in investment, technology transfer, irrigation, livestock, and processing of agricultural products. Nebraska enterprises are encouraged to invest in Vietnam and support capacity building in these sectors. Collaboration in science, technology, and training is also sought between research institutions and universities.
To facilitate smooth market access, the minister urged Nebraska to assist with standardization equipment and training to meet the stringent phytosanitary, disease control, and food safety requirements of the United States. The proposal includes organizing forums for businesses from both sides to exchange information, experiences, and lessons, fostering mutual support and improving productivity.
In pursuit of expanding bilateral trade, the minister suggested joint market surveys to identify potential agricultural products of interest to both Vietnam and the United States.
This collaboration between Vietnam and Nebraska promises to open new avenues for growth, trade expansion, and technological advancements in the agricultural sectors of both regions.
