UNL Studies Hairy Vetch for Weed and Nitrogen Management

Researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) are investigating how hairy vetch can support both weed management and nitrogen production in popcorn fields. The study focuses on determining whether the cover crop can help suppress Palmer amaranth, a troublesome weed, while also supplying nitrogen to improve crop growth and productivity.

The research is highlighted in a recent episode of N Field Observations, where Nebraska Extension Weed Management Specialist Amit Jhala and UNL Graduate Research Assistant Sai Suvidh Maddela return to the field to provide an update on the ongoing project. Their work examines how different methods of terminating hairy vetch, combined with various herbicide treatments, influence weed control and popcorn stand establishment.

Hairy vetch is widely valued as a cover crop because of its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and improve soil fertility. The research team is evaluating whether growers can benefit from both enhanced nitrogen availability and improved suppression of Palmer amaranth, potentially reducing reliance on additional fertilizer inputs and strengthening integrated weed management practices.

Throughout the growing season, researchers have monitored the effects of cover crop termination strategies on crop performance and weed pressure. By comparing multiple treatment combinations, the team aims to identify effective approaches that maintain healthy popcorn stands while minimizing competition from invasive weeds.

The project is part of broader efforts by Nebraska Extension and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to develop practical, science-based recommendations for producers. Findings from the study could help farmers make more informed decisions about cover crop management, herbicide programs, and nitrogen-use strategies.

Credit for the research goes to Amit Jhala, Sai Suvidh Maddela, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, whose work continues to explore innovative methods for improving crop production, weed control, and agricultural sustainability across Nebraska.
