A cover crop field day will take place on May 27 at the Henry J Stumpf International Wheat Center near Grant, Nebraska. The event, titled “Grow What Works: Cover Crops for Western Nebraska Cropping Systems,” will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. MDT and provide producers with information about cover crop options that may improve western Nebraska farming operations.

Registration for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. Participants will then travel to the field to explore a variety of cover crop systems and management practices through demonstrations, research presentations, and guided field tours.

Extension specialists will discuss several important agricultural topics connected to cover crop production. Planned discussions include water use, nitrogen leaching, irrigation management, herbicide programs, weed control, and soil health improvement. Organizers said the event is designed to help producers better understand how cover crops can support sustainable farming systems in western Nebraska.

Attendees will also hear from Meagan Schipanski of Colorado State University, who will provide the keynote presentation during the program. Her presentation will focus on covering crop management and agricultural sustainability practices relevant to producers across the region.

The field day will include producer experiences and ongoing research projects that highlight the practical use of cover crops under western Nebraska growing conditions. Organizers hope the event will encourage producers to evaluate different practices that improve soil quality, reduce nutrient loss, and strengthen long-term farm productivity.

The event is free to attend, and organizers will provide a complimentary lunch for participants. Registration is encouraged to help organizers prepare an accurate meal count for attendees.

The Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center is located east of Grant, Nebraska. Visitors traveling from U.S. Highway 61 should travel east on Road 761 for one mile and then turn south on Road 329. The facility is located one-half miles south on the east side of the road.

More information and registration details are available through the West Central Research Extension and Education Center website
