Agricultural producers affected by wildfires and other disasters often face difficult decisions, including selling livestock earlier or in larger numbers than planned. These actions can lead to unexpected tax consequences. To help address these challenges, the Center for Agricultural Profitability at the University of Nebraska Lincoln is offering an educational webinar.
“After the Fire: Tax Considerations and Planning for Livestock Sales” will take place at noon Central Time on April 29. The session will be presented by Tina Barrett, executive director and farm financial consultant with Nebraska Farm Business Inc., an organization that provides financial and management support to agricultural producers.
During the webinar, Tina Barrett will explain how certain livestock sales may qualify as weather related sales and why this classification is important for tax purposes. Understanding this distinction can help producers determine whether they are eligible for special tax treatments or relief options.
The session will also guide participants through practical strategies to manage the financial impact of livestock sales. Topics will include planning the timing of sales, maintaining accurate records, and working closely with financial advisors to make informed decisions. These steps can help reduce financial stress and support better recovery planning after a disaster.
In addition, the webinar will highlight key considerations for rebuilding herds and preparing for future risks. By learning effective tax planning methods, participants can improve their financial stability and decision making in challenging situations.
The webinar is free to attend, making it accessible to anyone interested in improving their understanding of tax issues related to agriculture. Participants are encouraged to register in advance through the Center for Agricultural Profitability website.
This initiative reflects the importance of education and support for agricultural communities facing natural disasters. By providing clear guidance and expert advice, the webinar aims to help individuals manage financial challenges and plan for a stronger future.
